As mother's we all experience our fair share of stress. A phrase that I hear a lot as the parent of a special needs child is, "I don't know how you do it."
I've never stopped to actually think about how I do it. Taking care of my special needs child just comes easy to me. I will admit that after Aimee was born our lives were hectic until I figured out how to juggle everyone's schedule. But, we managed very well.
As much as I'd like to take all of the credit for taking care of my family, there are people in the background that deserve some credit too! They are the people closest to my kids and I, our support group. Without my support group I don't know where I would be.
All mothers understand that they need support group, but they don't really appreciate just how important it really is until and unless they have a child with special needs.
As a single mother to two children who both have some sort of medical issues, I rely on my support system probably more than I should. All parents sometimes get overwhelmed, frustrated and feel like they just can't go on anymore. But as a parent of a child with special needs it feels as if I reach that point more often than the typical parent. It feels as if the hecticness of our lives gets to me so very quickly. I am blessed with a support group that will take my babies when I need it. As of late, my support group has been so kind as to give us a place to live until I can get on my feet in the next couple months.
We all need a good support system. We need those people in our lives that will help us through the toughest of times. So the answer to the age old question, "how do you do it?" is I work hard and I have a great support system. I am so thankful for the people in our lives. Without them, I'd be lost. So, mommy's be thankful for the people closest to you as the little things they do make even the most chaotic life manageable!
